Chapter 21

1 THEN Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel.

2 So David said to Joab the son of Zuriah and to the princes of the people, Go, number the people of Israel from Beersheba even to Dan, and come back to me, that I may know the number of the people.

3 And Joab said to King David, May the LORD make his people a hundred times so many more as they are, and let the eyes of my lord the king see it, for they are all his servants; why then should our lord the king require this thing?

4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem.

5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to David. And the total number of the children of Israel was one million and one hundred thousand footmen who drew the sword; and the tribe of Judah was four hundred and seventy thousand men who drew the sword.

6 But the Levites, the priests, and the tribe of Benjamin were not counted among them; for the king's word was abominable to Joab, and Joab was unwilling to number them.

7 And the LORD was displeased with this thing, because David had numbered Israel.

8 And David said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing; but now, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

9 And David arose early in the morning, and the word of the LORD came to Gad, the prophet, saying,

10 Go and tell David, saying, Thus says the LORD: I offer you three disasters; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.

11 So Gad the prophet came to David and said to him, Thus says the LORD: Choose for yourself

12 Either three years of famine in the land or three months to be defeated before your enemies while they shall pursue you and rule over you or else three days the sword of the LORD in Israel. Now therefore advise what answer you will give to him who sent me to you.

13 And David said .to Gad, I am in a great distress; let me be delivered into the hands of the LORD; for his mercies are very great; but let me not be delivered into the hand of men.

14 So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel; and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

15 And the LORD sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; and as he was destroying it, the LORD saw and considered it and averted the disaster, and said to the angel that destroyed, You have destroyed a great many, stay now your hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

16 And David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were with him clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

17 And David said to the LORD, Is it not I who commanded the people to be numbered? Even I it is who have sinned, and the folly which I have committed is great; but as for these innocent sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father's house; but let the plague cease from the people.

18 Then the angel of the LORD said to Gad the prophet, Go and say to David that David should go up and build an altar to the LORD in the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

19 And David went up at the saying of Gad which he spoke in the name of the LORD.

20 And David saw the angel who was destroying the people, that he had stayed his hand and was destroying no more.

21 And as David came to Aran, Aran turned and saw David and went out of his threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

22 Then David said to Aran, Give me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build on it an altar to the LORD; you shall give it to me for money at a good price, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

23 And Aran said to David, Take it to you, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes; and I will give you oxen also for burnt offering and the threshing instrument for wood and the wheat for the meal offering; everything which is needed I shall give it all.

24 But King David said to Aran, Far be it, but I will surely buy it with money for the full price; for I will not take that which is yours and offer a burnt offering to the LORD without cost.

25 So David bought from Aran that place of the threshing floor for fifty shekels.

26 And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings of lambs, and prayed before the LORD and he answered him, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offerings that were upon the altar.

27 And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put back his sword again into its sheath.

28 At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite, then he offered there many sacrifices.

29 And he pitched there before the LORD the tabernacle which Moses had made in the wilderness when the children of Israel went forth out of Egypt.

30 At that time David was exceedingly afraid, and could not go to pray before the LORD for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.

Kapitel 21

1 Und der Satan7854 stund wider5975 Israel3478 und gab David1732 ein, daß er Israel3478 zählen4487 ließ.

2 Und David1732 sprach559 zu Joab3097 und zu des Volks5971 Obersten8269: Gehet hin3212, zählet Israel3478, von Berseba an bis gen Dan1835; und bringet‘s zu mir, daß ich wisse3045, wieviel4557 ihrer ist935.

3 Joab3097 sprach559: Der HErr3068 tue zu seinem Volk5971, wie6471 sie1992 jetzt sind, hundertmal3967 soviel; aber, mein Herr113 König4428, sind sie1245 nicht3254 alle meines Herrn Knechte5650? Warum fraget denn mein Herr danach? Warum soll eine Schuld819 auf Israel3478 kommen?

4 Aber des Königs4428 Wort1697 ging1980 fort wider Joab3097. Und Joab3097 zog aus3318 und wandelte durch das ganze Israel3478 und kam935 gen Jerusalem3389.

5 Und3097 gab5414 die Zahl4557 des gezählten4662 Volks5971 David1732. Und3967 es war des ganzen Israel3478 elfhundertmal505 tausend505 Mann376, die das Schwert8025 auszogen8025, und Juda3063 vierhundertmal702 und siebenzigtausend Mann376, die das Schwert2719 auszogen.

6 Levi3878 aber und Benjamin1144 zählete er6485 nicht unter8432 diese; denn es war dem Joab3097 des Königs4428 Wort1697 ein Greuel8581.

7 Aber solches1697 gefiel5869 GOtt430 übel3415; denn er schlug5221 Israel3478.

8 Und5650 David1732 sprach559 zu3966 GOtt430: Ich habe5674 schwerlich gesündiget, daß ich das1697 getan2398 habe; nun aber nimm weg die Missetat5771 deines Knechts, denn ich habe fast töricht5528 getan6213.

9 Und der HErr3068 redete1696 mit Gad1410, dem Schauer Davids1732, und sprach559:

10 Gehe3212 hin5186 und rede mit David1732 und sprich1696: So2007 spricht559 der HErr3068: Dreierlei7969 lege ich559 dir vor; erwähle977 dir der eins259, das ich dir tue6213.

11 Und da Gad1410 zu David1732 kam935, sprach559 er zu ihm: So spricht559 der HErr3068: Erwähle dir6901

12 entweder drei7969 Jahre8141 Teurung, oder drei7969 Monden2320 Flucht5595 vor deinen Widersachern und vor dem Schwert2719 deiner Feinde6862, daß518 dich‘s7725 ergreife5381, oder drei7969 Tage3117 das776 Schwert2719 des HErrn3068 und Pestilenz1698 im Lande6440, daß der Engel4397 des HErrn3068 verderbe7843 in allen Grenzen1366 Israels3478. So siehe nun zu, was1697 ich antworten soll7200 dem, der mich gesandt7971 hat.

13 David1732 sprach559 zu3966 Gad1410: Mir ist3027 fast angst6887; doch ich will in die Hand3027 des HErrn3068 fallen5307, denn seine Barmherzigkeit7356 ist sehr3966 groß7227, und will nicht in Menschenhände120 fallen5307.

14 Da ließ5414 der HErr3068 Pestilenz1698 in Israel3478 kommen, daß siebenzigtausend Mann376 fielen5307 aus Israel3478.

15 Und GOtt430 sandte7971 den Engel4397 gen Jerusalem3389, sie zu verderben7843. Und im Verderben7843 sah7200 der HErr3068 drein, und reuete ihn das Übel und sprach559 zum Engel4397, dem7451 Verderber7843: Es5162 ist5975 genug7227, laß deine Hand3027 ab7503! Der Engel4397 aber des HErrn3068 stund bei der Tenne1637 Arnans, des Jebusiters2983.

16 Und David1732 hub seine Augen5869 auf5375 und sah7200 den Engel4397 des HErrn3068 stehen5975 zwischen Himmel8064 und Erde776, und ein bloß Schwert8025 in6440 seiner Hand3027 ausgereckt über Jerusalem3389. Da fiel5307 David1732 und die Ältesten2205, mit Säcken8242 bedeckt3680, auf5186 ihr Antlitz.

17 Und David1732 sprach559 zu GOtt430: Bin ich‘s nicht, der das Volk5971 zählen4487 hieß? Ich bin, der gesündiget und das Übel7489 getan2398 hat; diese Schafe6629 aber, was haben sie559 getan6213? HErr3068, mein GOtt430, laß deine Hand3027 wider mich und meines Vaters1 Haus1004 und nicht wider dein Volk5971 sein zu plagen7489!

18 Und3068 der Engel4397 sprach559 zu Gad1410, daß er David1732 sollte sagen559, daß David1732 hinaufgehen5927 und dem HErrn3068 einen Altar4196 aufrichten6965 sollte in der Tenne1637 Arnans, des Jebusiters2983.

19 Also ging5927 David1732 hinauf nach dem Worte Gads1410, das1697 er geredet hatte1696 in des HErrn3068 Namen8034.

20 Arnan aber, da er sich7725 wandte und sah7200 den Engel4397, und seine vier702 Söhne1121 mit ihm, versteckten sie sich2244; denn Arnan drosch1758 Weizen2406.

21 Als nun David1732 zu Arnan ging935, sah5027 Arnan und ward Davids gewahr; und ging heraus aus3318 der Tenne1637 und betete7812 David an7200 mit seinem Antlitz639 zur Erde776.

22 Und David1732 sprach559 zu Arnan: Gib5414 mir Raum in der Tenne1637, daß ich einen Altar4196 dem HErrn3068 drauf baue1129; um voll4392 Geld3701 sollst du mir ihn geben5414, auf4725 daß die Plage4046 vom Volk5971 aufhöre6113.

23 Arnan aber sprach559 zu David1732: Nimm3947 dir5869 und mache6213, mein Herr113 König4428, wie dir‘s gefällt2896; siehe7200, ich gebe5414 das Rind1241 zum Brandopfer5930 und das Geschirr4173 zu Holz6086 und Weizen2406 zum Speisopfer4503: alles gebe5414 ich.

24 Aber der König4428 David1732 sprach559 zu Arnan: Nicht5927 also7069, sondern um voll4392 Geld3701 will ich‘s kaufen7069; denn ich will nicht, das dein ist5375, nehmen vor dem HErrn3068 und will‘s nicht umsonst2600 haben zum Brandopfer5930.

25 Also gab5414 David1732 Arnan um den Raum4725 Gold2091 am Gewicht4948 sechshundert8337 Sekel.

26 Und David1732 bauete daselbst dem HErrn3068 einen Altar4196 und opferte Brandopfer5930 und Dankopfer8002. Und da er1129 den HErrn3068 anrief7121, erhörete er ihn durchs Feuer784 vom Himmel8064 auf5927 dem Altar4196 des Brandopfers5930.

27 Und der HErr3068 sprach559 zum Engel4397, daß er sein7725 Schwert2719 in seine Scheide5084 kehrete.

28 Zur selbigen Zeit6256, da David1732 sah7200, daß ihn der HErr3068 erhöret hatte6030 auf dem Platz1637 Arnans, des Jebusiters2983, pflegte er daselbst zu opfern2076.

29 Denn die Wohnung4908 des HErrn3068, die Mose4872 in der Wüste4057 gemacht hatte6213, und5930 der Brandopferaltar4196 war zu der Zeit6256 in der Höhe1116 zu Gibeon1391.

30 David1732 aber konnte3201 nicht hingehen3212 vor6440 denselben, GOtt430 zu suchen1875, so war er erschrocken1204 vor6440 dem Schwert2719 des Engels4397 des HErrn3068.
